Network tolerance in RAP [message #106710] Mon, 29 September 2008 10:32 Go to next message

Hi,

I've got a question regarding the RAP platform. Currently if your
network connection goes down, the session is immediately lost - would it
be a lot of work to build in some tolerance of unreliable network
connections e.g. Wifi, so that the session remains open even if some
requests are lost? Google mail for example displays an error message if
connections are lost but recovers when the connection is restored.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

currently, there is a basic mechanism in place that alerts the user
if a request could not be sent and asks to retry. Didn't it work in
your scenario?

In contrast to e.g. GMail, RAP requires the client and server to be
always in sync as the client just 'draws' a representation of the
widget-tree that is held server-side. In RAP, the server holds the
'master-copy'.

We have an item on our long term TODO list, that will allow to reset
the client state in case client and server are out of sync. I think
that would help in the case you mentioned but I an not sure if we
will manage to implement this in 1.2.

Cheers,
Rüdiger

That mechanism is perfect in fact, the only problem is that it doesn't
seem to work in FF3 on windows (it just displays the timeout page
straight away) and in IE6 it works but only after you clear the browser
cache (otherwise when the connection goes the widgets still respond but
basically nothing happens). Haven't tested other platforms yet.

A client/server sync would be great in the future.

Hi,

the current behavior of RAP in case that a request was sent to an (for
what ever reasons) unreachable server is that a message is displayed
that informs the user about the situation. The user has two options: he
can retry or abort. So I have to admit if he chooses abort then he's
done... he can't reastablish the connection later on. So there's
probably some room for improvement.

Ciao
Frank
