Dear ATL/QVT users and developers,
please consider submitting a case study proposal for the GraBaTs
graph/model/program transformation tool contest, as described in
detail below (see ``Phase 1: Case proposal submission''). In the 2008
contest, we did not have participants from the Eclipse M2M community
although the third case study proposed last year seems particularly
relevant:
http://is.tm.tue.nl/staff/pvgorp/events/grabats2009/?page=Ca seStudyDescriptions08#case3
If you do think a better case study is needed to fairly compare today's
model transformation languages and tools, this is your chance for
submitting a proposal!

A PDF version of this call can be found on
http://is.tm.tue.nl/staff/pvgorp/events/grabats2009/CallForC ases.pdf

Graph-Based Tools Contest 2009: Call for Cases
************************************************

Zurich, 2-3 July 2009 (tentative)

Satellite workshop to TOOLS 2009
http://is.tm.tue.nl/staff/pvgorp/events/grabats2009/
************************************************

Tools are crucial for the promotion of graph and model
transformation in industry. Currently, a variety of tool
environments exist for different graph and model transformation
approaches. These tools have already been compared in some
detail. However, for potential users, working in application
domains where transformation techniques may be useful, it is
difficult to select the right tool for their purpose. Moreover,
even for most of the tool experts it is true that they know about
one or two tools but little about others. Finally, and maybe most
importantly, the tool developers themselves can also be inspired
by a more detailed understanding of the related approaches. The aim
of this event is to compare the expressiveness, the usability and
the performance of graph and model transformation tools along a
number of selected case studies. That is, we want to learn about
the pros and cons of each tool considering different
applications. A deeper understanding of the relative merits of
different tool features will help to further improve graph and
model transformation tools and to indicate open problems.

This contest is the third of its kind: the first tool contest
took place as part of the AGTIVE 2007 workshop in Kassel,
Germany. The second contest took place at ICGT 2008 in Leicester,
UK. The upcoming contest will be organized as a satellite event
of the TOOLS 2009 conference in Zurich, Switzerland. Since TOOLS
is collocated with the international conference on model
transformation (ICMT), the contest should involve teams from the
major international players in the development and use of model
transformation tools. Experts from the program transformation
community are very welcome too.

Since 2008, the GraBaTs tool contest is not limited anymore to
intensive offline development on predefined cases: the workshop
involves a live contest session. During this session,
participants are handed out a transformation problem description
which they will be asked to solve within one afternoon session.
In this track of the contest, we want to compare the usability of
the tools for rapid development. By providing this pragmatic
track, the case studies from the offline track can be designed
for a more detailed and technical comparison in terms of run-time
performance, memory footprint, standard compliance (MOF/ECORE,
XMI/GXL, ...), reuse (MDR/EMF, off-the-shelf metamodels, ...),
appeal (understandability of the transformation definition,
conciseness, ...), verification, ...

************************************************
1 Contest Phases
************************************************
Phase 1: Case proposal submission
===============================

In order to facilitate the comparison of transformation tools, we
are soliciting potential case studies for the offline contest
track. If you have a suitable case study, please describe it
shortly but as detailed as needed and submit it before March 27
to the online submission system. A submission should include a
set of test-cases for evaluating a solution to the case study.
Submitted case descriptions that have been carried out using a
given tool already should provide a reference implementation for
testing the input/output behavior of submissions. A committee
will select a small, but representative set of case studies to be
used for the contest. Electronic attachments (test cases,
reference solution, ...) to accepted proposals will be made
available on the GraBaTs website
[http://is.tm.tue.nl/staff/pvgorp/events/grabats2009/?page=C aseStudyDescriptions].

Additionally, an online discussion forum will be provided for
each accepted case study.

Please submit at
http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=grabats2009.

===============================
Phase 2: Case solution submission
===============================

All those who like to participate in the contest are asked to
choose one or more case studies, take their favorite
graph/model/program transformation tool and submit their
solutions. Each submission should cover the following issues:

• a short presentation of the chosen transformation tool,
• a description of the chosen case study variant (if any),
• a presentation of the chosen solution,
• a discussion of design decisions,
• a comparison to other solutions (if available).

More detailed instructions will be given in the case descriptions
themselves. Solutions are to be submitted by May 15, 2009.
Depending on the number of submissions, a selection will be made
of solutions to be presented; the other submissions will get a
chance for a (non-plenary) tool demo at the end of the workshop.
In addition, it is planned to have a special journal issue where
submitters have a chance to improve and write up their solutions.
The 2008 edition resulted in a special section in the Springer
STTT journal.

Please submit at
http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=grabats2009

===============================
Phase 3: Workshop and live contest
===============================

The GraBaTs workshop spans two days. The case study for the live
contest will be revealed first time at the beginning of the
workshop. This ensures that no team can make unfair preparations
beforehand. The live contest takes place in a controlled
environment and may involve several iterations. We measure the
time to complete a core problem and a set of extensions to that
core. Workshop attendees that do not participate in the live
contest are invited to a discussion session for designing and/or
refining the criteria for evaluating solutions to all case
studies (from both the live track and the offline tracks). For
more details, please consult the GraBaTs website
[ http://is.tm.tue.nl/staff/pvgorp/events/grabats2009/?page=Wo rkshopProgram].

Please note that the call for solutions for this contest has been
distributed to mailing lists such as PlanetMDE in the meanwhile. See
http://is.ieis.tue.nl/staff/pvgorp/events/grabats2009/?page= CaseStudyDescriptions
for details.

Looking forward to your participation!
