hi!

i'm currently using eclipse 3.1 (gtk) with the ve 1.1rc1 build.

i'm using it on linux with jdk 1.50_03, 1,8ghz cpu and 512 mb ram. the
speed of the ve, while adding components or moving them is _really_
slow. any ideas how to speed things up?

especially compared to netbeans 4.1, eclipse ve feels slow. are there
plans to change this or is it a configuration problem?

many thanks in advance.

Tobias

The VE team is taking a much-needed vacation, but when we all get back
in the middle of next week, I strongly suggest that you coordinate with
Gili to do a VNC demo so we can isolate this problem.

It came up for me too when we were testing, but then I couldn't
reproduce it for Gili, so we closed the bug. We really want to figure
out what makes VE slow on Linux, and any help you can provide would be
awesome!

Best regards,

Hi Tobias,
It would be excellent if you could hit a reproduceable scenario so that
we could recreate it here and determine the problem. Also, it would be
nice to determine if this happens only for your system, or across
multiple systems, so that we know for sure if it some configuration
specific for your system.
Regards,
Sri.

Hi!

I am using at work Eclipse in Linux Box (RedHat 9 with 2.6.x kernel, JDK
1.50_03). I have also noticed slowness in my projects when designing
GUIs. Unfortunately I am on vacation now, and can't give any exact
information at the moment.

When I will return to work and continue developing SW, I will post more
information about my environment, and problem situations I will face etc.

I just wanted to point out that there are others suffering performance
problems with Eclipse and VE under Linux distribution. Tobias, you are
not alone ;)

Best regards,
Jussi

I think I'm getting this on my debian linux system with sun's JDK
1.5.0_03, eclipse 3.1 and VE 1.1 here too. The specs are roughly the same
as Tobias'.

Even just creating a single Swing frame or SWT composite takes a while to
finish opening the design tab. Changing a property takes a good 5 or so
seconds to manifest any differences at least, and adding components
exhibits similar symptoms. This is for a project completely empty besides
a single visual class, no other projects open, except the swt library's
source. The system isn't overloaded with anything else running, besides
eclipse.

I'll install VE and dependencies in a copy of eclipse 3.1 for windows, so
I can get a baseline for comparison for speed on my system, and use swing
to try to minimise platform-specific differences.

Is there anything you can suggest for trying to profile VE to track down
if this is a gtk issue, an swt<->gtk interface issue, or a VE issue?
I tried changing gtk themes a few times to make sure it wasn't a horribly
slow gtk theme engine at work, mostly because i was seeing things like

!ENTRY org.eclipse.jem.proxy 2 0 2005-07-25 19:40:32.279
!MESSAGE
+++ Warning +++: Mon Jul 25 19:40:32 EST 2005 Project (Testering)-VM for Testering:err>

/usr/share/themes/Simple/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:57: Engine "redmond95" is unsupported, ignoring

in the .log file. Changing the theme didn't make the warnings go away,
however.

Unfortunately, I haven't got an internet link conducive to remote
operation, but I'm happy to check out VE's source and enable some kind of
profiling if it's possible.
