I did read that, but it didn't address directly my question. It deleted
NodeEditPolicy, but that is an implementation. It did not specify that
the architecture was doing away with the associated Role, NODE_ROLE.

If it is, then that would be fine, but the architecture needs to catch up,
especially the notes/javadoc.

Use GRAPHIC_NODE_ROLE if you need to deal with layout constraints and visual
feedback and so on. Otherwise NODE_ROLE is sufficient.
