How to achieve different independent installations [message #90603] Tue, 08 July 2003 11:31 Go to next message

I have installed eclipse 2.0 working very well for development of web
applications.

In future I need to install different IDE solutions (packages of specific
plug-ins) for evaluation purposes on the same PC for e.g. mobile
development. Later that should be deleted in order to try another one.

But I don't want to take the risk to crash my existing installation. Does
eclipse suppot different configurations with different sets of plug-ins? Or
do I have to maintain different independent eclipse installation (using
different install directories).

Which one is the right way to do it? Thanks for your help.

You can use -configuration or -plugins (this one is deprecated) command line
argument to switch between different plugin sets. But I prefere to use
different directory because plugins consume a lion share of the disk space
occupated by Eclipse. In such a way I keep 3-4 releases simultaneously.
