Eclipse 3.1, Update manager freezes network connection [message #86136] Wed, 13 July 2005 10:43 Go to next message

Hello,

If I use the Help->Software Updates->Find and Install... and try to install
ANY new plugin the download starts but then after a short time the network
connection freezes followed by freezing Eclipse.
If I deactivate the network connection and activate it again the
installation almost continues but sometimes an error message appears:

Problem Occured

Update operation has failed

and I am only able to click OK and then the installation failed.

I use WindowsXP Professional and

Eclipse Version: 3.1.0, Build id: I20050627-1435

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

Yes this sounds exactly like my problem. What type of connection do you=
=

have to the internet?

I am going to have to give up on Eclipse if I can't get these update =

problems solved.

I have since dropped back to 3.0.2 and have "operation fail" errors when=
I =

try the update process.

I just can't promote a tool wich is this hard to configure!

If you figure out any thing PLEASE let me know!

Thanks
-Dale

Hello,

I have two kinds of network connections (and two network adapter in my PC)
one is ADSL from German T-Online, the other is an LAN connection which goes
over a proxy server which is connected by an 1 MBit SDSL line. Both
connections have the same problem if I start an update procedure out of
Eclipse 3.1.

So until now I don't have any solution, I don't now either where to get
further help on it. Here in the newsgroup seem more people have this
problem, but until now now solution was posted.

So if you have a solution please let me know also!

best regards!

It would be a shame to "give up on" a tool that is incredibly productive
just because of this one issue. Did you follow my suggestion to file a
Bugzilla entry with all the details? That is the real way to get
attention, especially if you can provide exact steps so that a developer
can reproduce the problem.
Also, you should be aware that this is not a normal behavior - it is
obviously something that only a couple of people have experienced, not
all users. Furthermore, using the update manager is not something that
needs to be done very often - you can very well use Eclipse for months
without needing to update. That doesn't mean the issue should not be
solved, just that it is not one that you have to run into very often.

Eric

Hello Eric,

Yes I did create a bugreport under http://bugs.eclipse.org.

The No. of this bug is 103776, so you can watch it, hope this helps!

By the way, one needs the update manager not only for updating. I need it to
install new plugins. So what you said the update manager is needed seldomly
is not that correct ;-)
Of course one can download the compressed files and decompress into the
features/plugin folder manually, but the more comfortable way is using the
update manager, or not?

best regards
