Is there anyway we can cherry pick old downloads and clean it off from the local sapphire downloads directory, just to save space on the local drive.

This typically useful when we keep updating the sources and build them locally on fortnightly basis or so ..

I guess we could completely wipe off the downloads, but it will be great if we can be selective on the same. Not sounding like a good idea ? but just curious to know if we can do that.

Controlling the downloads cache is definitely a problem, but we currently have no good solution for it. The only thing that works is to nuke the whole directory periodically. The cache is very simplistic. It just hashes the download URL to produce the local file name. But that means, there is no way to list/manage contents selectively. Need to improve it somehow... Will probably use last use time stamps and expiration.
