What is your memory available? It just dawnded on me that is one reason
for such extremelly slow. It should be at least 500m, a gig is better.
500meg can still run slow because of everything else running at the same
time.

512meg can be tight. look at your taskmanager (Windows Taskbar->popup
menu->TaskManager), go to the Performance page and see if your Total
Memory, Available, Commit charge indicate you are using up all of your
memory and it bouncing into swap land.

Is your disk being accessed continually when it gets slow like this
(heavy disk activity at these times indicate a lot swapping going on)?

Is the rest of Eclipse slow too?

Please check one more time that there isn't a .log file in your
workspace's .metadata directory. The other .log you had doesn't say
anything useful.

If that is not there, then I'm stumped because sure, the VE is slow to
start up, but it is never in the minutes range once it is up and
running. It only gets like that if there were errors, and such errors
are logged.

Then I wanted to insert a JTextfield - for whatever a progress dialog =

Sorry, I sent the last message without finishing.
Meanwhile I weait for the coming back of Eclipse - I pointed with the =

mouse to the place I want to insert the text field - this took about 3 =

minutes.
And so on and so on. Every operation takes a lot of time and now and the=
n =

a progress dialog pops up ("Operation in progress").
It works, but obviously too slowly - so no wonder that there is no =

..log-file. ( I even closed and opende Eclipse again).

And debugging is the hell too - it is the same, every step over a source=
=

code line takes a few minutes (to get the debugger-perspective took 5 =

minutes, that means it takes very long to establish the debug-connection=
).
After the debugging I got a .log-file that I include - it tells somethin=
g =

about time out of connections - no wonder :-)

I suppose the reasons are to be found
either in the java-installation (1.4.2 installed by Opera installation)
or
the memory the java vm should use (what is the default value?)
or
in some programs that could influence eclipse (like Opera, that uses the=
=

same java-installation, a firewall or the webwasher. However, all these =
=

programs didn't run)

I have no idea how to check out the things or what else to check.

I suggest getting debugging working quickly first. Debug has been
stable for a lot longer than VE. What they do is also a lot simpler and
better-understood than what we do. Once you get debugging performing
well, I'll be that VE will perform well too.

Off the cuff, it really sounds like you're getting network timeouts
there. Both debug and VE establish network connections to "remote"
JVMs, and use those for various purposes.

I suspect a possible routing problem or something like that.

What O/S are you on?

I just installed everything new including JAVA SDK.
I suppose there is problem between the JVM and Eclipse, because simple =

debugging causes timeouts.

I attached the settings that are told me by Help-About Eclipse and the =

..log-file from debugging of a simple HelloWorld program.

I have no idea where the communication problem is to be found, I closed =
=

the firewall without more luck, so it must be 'system intern".
Are there some settings within Eclipse I have forgotten (I didn't set =

anything for the simple HelloWorld) ?
Or do I have to tell the JVM more - as I said I just installed the Eclip=
se =

and did not changed anything (but I included java into the path-variable=
)

My OS is Windows 2000.

Thomas,

Perhaps your firewall or some other program messed with your loopback
routing. Take a look at the file C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in
a text editor. Make sure that there's a line that says:
127.0.0.1 localhost

Otherwise, I'm stumped. You can ask about the slowness of the debugger
in the eclipse.tools.jdt newsgroup - someone there will most likely have
an idea of what's going on.

Maybe. Try turning them all on again, and see if that fixes it. Then
if it does, try turning them off one-by-one until you see which one
breaks it again.

Thomas:

I had a similar experience with Eclipse then I tried Netbeans and DRJava
and they were the same.

It turns out that the latest version of the ZoneAlarm firewall was the
cause of my problems. I reverted to an earlier version (5.5.062.000)
and my problems went away.

The task manager tells me (I am debugging now), that there are about 200=

mb from 500mb are available - there is no significant disk activity, so =
=

there are no real important swap activities.

Please check one more time that there isn't a .log file in your
workspace's .metadata directory. The other .log you had doesn't say
anything useful.

If that is not there, then I'm stumped because sure, the VE is slow to
start up, but it is never in the minutes range once it is up and
running. It only gets like that if there were errors, and such errors
are logged.

I installed eclipse once again include online updates
GEF 3.0.1.
EMF 2.0.1
VE 1.0.1

Then I used the VE again for editing something easy.
The result was nearly the same :-(
I didn't even run the Operabrowser which uses the same java VM.

I created a jav.awt.Dilaog-derived class, tried to resize it, every =

operation took about one minute.
Then I wanted to insert a JTextfield - for whatever a progress dialog =

popped up.

Hi Rich,

please forget the other mails I sent here in order to reply. The basic =
=

problem is that the

t. =

I have no idea, even when I turned off all the programs that could =

influence Eclipse or the Java VM (virus scanner, firewall, Opera browser=
), =

it is very slow. So I assume I must tell eclipse or the java VM somethin=
g =

more about each other by setting some parameters ?

Or do I have to tell the JVM more - as I said I just installed the Eclip=
se =

and did not changed anything (but I included java into the path-variable=
)

My OS is Windows 2000.

Regards
Thomas

And so I do now.
I couldn't know at the beginning that the VE problem seems to be the sam=

as the debug problem.
Anyway, thanks for the help :-)
