Hi,
I looked into supplying some patches, and rather than just copy some
classes into a bugzilla, it would be better if I actually set up a
working build of Xtext and do it the right way.

Are there instructions somewhere?

you can look at the build job configuration: https://hudson.eclipse.org/hudson/job/Xtext-nightly-HEAD/configure

Take also a a look into releng/org.eclipse.xtext.releng project.
