I notice that in creating projects, the project name matches the project directory.

Is there any way to separate these two?

I want a longer project name for descriptive purposes, but I want a shorter, more succinct path name for technical and programming ease.

Ken,

You can specify the project location separate from the project name.

Ken,

The wizard has a "Use default location" you have to uncheck before you
can entire some arbitrary location.

Yeah, it's not working. Here's two examples:

You have to locate the project outside the workspace. Pick a directory somewhere else in your file system.
