Timeframe for Integrating AspectJ Load-Time Weaving into OSGi? [message #64342] Sun, 02 April 2006 15:09 Go to next message

I read with interest the page at
http://www.eclipse.org/equinox/incubator/aspects/index.php

Also noted the related eclipse talk at
http://www.eclipsecon.org/2006/Sub.do?id=56 (unfortunately no presentation
or summery to download for people that did not attend).

Any idea about when this kind of technology will be released for general use
(eclipse 3.2, 3.3 ... ?)

Cheers,
Morten

Hi Morten,

Matthew and I will publish the slides from the EclipseCon demo on the
website soon. I will send you a short notice, if you like.

The code will also be committed to the CVS, soon. It will work with the
current 3.2 milestones and should be ready to use for the 3.2 release
(but still be in the incubator stage).

Does this answer your questions?

Cheers,
Martin

Thanks. The project sounds great! I will look forward to read it (posting on
the web site is just fine).

Yes, but what does "still in the incubator stage" mean for your users? I.e.
for research use only or something that could be used for a project aimed
for production?

Cheers,
Morten

My goal for the Aspects incubator is that the code can be used for
general production systems. Since it will not be part of the official
SDK release for 3.2 (I think) we will provide separate downloads.

Martin,

I'm also eagerly awaiting the release of AOSGi. Has any progress been made
since this thread? The promise that it will be "soon" is frustratingly
vague!

If you can just make something (anything!) available that we can start to
play with, that would be great. It doesn't have to be production-ready...
"release early and often" as they say :-)

Regards
Neil

Yes, I agree, and I am sorry about it. Matthew made progress on getting
AOSGi to work with 3.2 M6 (works!) but still needs to finish those
activities that are necessary to make formerly closed-source stuff
open-source.

I am a big fellow of "release early and often". As mentioned above it is
more a question of getting those stuff out of the closed-source-legal-box.

You can start to play around with AJEER if you like:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ajeer.

Works with 3.1 and AspectJ 5 and it should be pretty easy to move your
code from AJEER to the incubator stuff when it becomes available.

Hope this helps!!!

Best regards,
-Martin

Aaahhh, I didn't realise lawyers were involved. Say no more!

Thanks, I will look into AJEER. I was worried about spending time looking
at AJEER if it was all about to be made obsolete, so I'm glad to hear that
that's not the case.

Neil
