Why does each assocation have an "x" at each end? [message #628100]

Whenever I create associations, each end appears to have an "X". I finally discovered that I could set aggregations, but even when I did that, it showed the aggregation icon, in addition to the "X" icon. What are those "X" icons, and how do I get rid of them?

I also notice that the rule for setting the aggregation is a little confusing. I want the diamond on the "source" side, but I have to set "Aggregation " to "Composite" on the TARGET end in order to get the diamond on the source side. That makes no sense to me.
