Which is the preferred development environment for gef3d?
Can I checkout the gef3d source from galileo?

As Chris explained, we are still in the Incubator and you are right, we
are short of committers. There are only two people actively developing
GEF3D, so progress is slow, but it is steady. There are a few key
features still missing from GEF3D, and as long as those are not
implemented we cannot push for an official release. Maybe next year
(thanks for the vote of confidence, Chris!).

It was quite surprising to see that gef3d installable distribution is not
included in the galileo release.
Is it because of lack of features in gef3d? Or is it because you are short
of committers to do the planned work?
Infact, the concept of a programmable 3-dimensional editor to solve the
business/technical problems is a great idea.

GEF 3D still needs to graduate and release a "1.0"
The project is still incubating.
Once it graduates, it can decide whether or not to be part of the
release train (which comes with some more requirements).
It's kind of explained in the long Eclipse development process:
http://www.eclipse.org/projects/dev_process/development_proc ess.php
I'm sure if Jens and other GEF 3D committers keep up the good work, they
can get it in the next release train. It's also useful to the GEF 3D
team to know who is actually adopting the technology ;)
