For second problem, the crash, try making any view a fast view, do you get a
crash?

thank you very much that was the right hint. I'm not using IE and so I
never updatede on this machine. Now eclips works fine on both
machines. There is also no more crash when leaving the welcom to
eclipse site by clicking the upper right workbench icon.
