Searching, Bookmarks and External Diff [message #60024] Sat, 30 April 2005 05:29

I have been trialling Eclipse for our company for a while, and so far I am
completely sold on its integration of building, CVS integration and
on-target debugging for our Embedded C project.

However, there are a few features which I find sorely missing on the
editing side which I've looked and I've looked, but cannot find anywhere.
I wonder whether I have just failed to spot them or whether they just
don't exist.

1. Searching Files
I am used to using Visual Studio, and moving to Eclipse I miss the
following:
(i) when searching through files the one line summary which appears in
the search results (rather than just the number of matches in the file
which Eclipse reports)

(ii) the ability to search the contents of file in an arbitrary file
system directory (rather than the contents of the workspace)

2. Rapid bookmarking.
Quite often I am editing 2000 odd line files. In Visual Studio you can
press ctrl-F2 and enter a bookmark. Pressing F2 then quickly cycles
through the bookmarks set in a file. Is there an easy way to do this in
Eclipse? The Eclipse bookmarks are far too cumbersome to be set and
jumped to in a hurry.

3. Eclipse's CVS integration is brilliant, but for most likely purely
subjective and personal reasons I like Beyond Compare rather than
Eclipse's comparison tool. Is there anyway you can get Eclipse to us an
external diff command?

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Stephan

PS. I am also struggling with the whole workspace sharing between
developers issue, but it looks like quite a bit has been written on this
one already.
