What are my options for the most flexible layout format ? for example, i
remember in crystal reports and impromptu that i could drag and drop data
elements just about anywhere on the screen, resize the fields. and the
preview would automatically show an updated report.
I'm new to BIRT, and it appears that the layout is quite strict (bound to
rows and columns) and doesn't leave much room for improvisation ?
Another problem i have:
i'm using a table format, i have 3 detail rows.
the first row contains 5 columns.
in the second row I merged the first 2 columns because the data is text that
can be quite long.
What i saw, is that instead of the text being wrapped and continued on a new
line, that the width of the columns is automatically enlarged in an effort
to try to fit all the text on the same line.
But the problem is that the layout view does not reflect the real width of
the cells. so they appear in the layout view all about the same width, but
when i look at the preview, columns 1 and 2 take up 90% of the width.

Hi,
For problem 1:
BIRT uses CSS style layout control but crystal is different, so user need
quite different experices.
Could you provide more details of you requirement? You can file a bugzilla
enhacement of the features you really want.
For problem 2:
Could you try to set the width property of columns to fit your report?
If you let the width property blank, that means fit to contents.
When you do the design in layout view, table layout without true data.
When you preview it, table layout with true data.
I guess that's the reason of that layout different.
You'd better to set width property of columns to control the witdh.

Strange, it doesn't seem to have any effect ? i tried putting a value to all
the fields, did a preview, nothing changed. did html preview, same problem.
is it only the width variable that handles the column width ? I notice
dozens of parameters i can set for the column, and also parameters for the
cells, but i don't (yet) understand how everything fits together.
thanks for your help,
tom.

Tom,
I believe the feature your looking for is a free-form layout, which is
in the ROM spec. Unfortunately, the free-form layout was not scheduled
to be built until a later release of the product. Hopefully this
feature will make it into release 2.0. If you want to track this
feature, you may want to put an enhancement request into Bugzilla.
I am not sure about the behavior you are describing in the columns, I
will try and have a look and see if there are some options to limit
column widths to a specified percentage of size.
