DocBook Editor? [message #5069] Tue, 22 April 2003 23:27 Go to next message

I'm using docbook extensively for almost all documentation purposes but have
still not found any WYSIWYG-tool that's worth it's name.

I am trying to get my collegues on the DocBook track but it's not that easy
considering I'm an XML-geek they are not.

Therefor I came up with an idea on building an editor-plugin on the Eclipse
platform that supports atleast some of the tags in the DocBook standard (Not
that many are in reality used).

Now I need a jumpstart, where to start and is there any half-way-through
examples? I have downloaded/installed/tried out the "Eclipse SDK Examples".

I am in no way a king on Java and I have never written an editor in any
language at all yet. Is this perhaps a too huge project?

I plan to run this as an open-source project.

Oho, look what I found: a brand new DocBook project at sourceforges:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/doclipse/

Nothing released yet but it makes sence trying to contribute to this project
instead. My questions are still actual though.

Really? Have you tried XMetal?

It's going to be a big one. Especially if you're trying for something better
than the commercial products out there.

Eclipse doesn't have much to help you in the way of heavy-duty formatted
editing, except maybe GEF. I guess I would start by coming up to speed on
GEF. See the links from the eclipse.org page and the eclipse.tools.gef
newsgroup.

As a matter of fact I had not. But I just tried out the trial and it looked
not too bad. But where can I find rules and templates that supports DocBook,
or is each user supposed to create those files by themselfes?
Thanks for the tip btw!

I do think that complexity comes with flexibility, if the Eclipse Plugin
only aims for supporting very limiting parts of the whole DocBook standard
that part won't be the problem. I'm more concerned about cut'n'paste,
navigation within the dokument, performance when XML->HTML (or whatever
format it might be) must be done i RT.

I signed up to that group and will start reading more in that direction.
Thanks for your support
