there seems to be another bug in the position information (x/y
coordinates). I get back values < -300 if the robot is near the rocks.

seems to be reproducable, and maybe the top camera does not get/detect
the robot if it is near the wall.

According to the coordinate system, the min/max should also be -100 and
+100 and -87 and +87

Yes - the most likely explanation is that the ARTag code cannot detect the pattern as well if the rover is near the walls. Can you work around this by rejecting outliers (and maybe extrapolating position information)?
