BitTorrent : a better way to distribute Eclipse ? [message #52048] Tue, 08 April 2003 23:06

After Eclipse 2.1 was announced, 'download*.eclipse.org' was hammered for
2-3 days. I could only get mine after a few days. The Slashdot story
( http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/03/28/22542 57&mode=nested&
tid=108) didn't help either!

Now we have mirror sites, but still I don't think they will sustain the
masses as Eclipse become more popular(evident from Linux .iso
distributions). That got me thinking.. why not we use BitTorrent
(http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/) to distribute Eclipse in the future?

- BitTorrent is very easy to install for most browsers
- it works very well (just click the link, and the 'save as' dialog
box appears)
- every one who downloads also uploads and help others to get it.
So as opposed to servers, the more people download the faster it is for
every one(of course limited by connection limits)
- we can actually track how many downloads are done dy Bit Torrent
(as opposed to other P2P programs)
- Linux Mandrake 9.1 and RedHat 9.0 are distributed by the same
technology. And it went very well. (RedHat .iso was leaked to public a
week before they officially released it to public)
- .torrent files are easy to make and distribute.
- we can make the zip file and torrent files available. So people
can continue to download the the 'old way'

Any suggestions?
