"Initializing Java Tooling" Error [message #511122] Fri, 29 January 2010 19:42 Go to next message

I have tried to reinstall Eclipse to get rid of this error, but whenever I start up Eclipse I get the following:

An internal error occurred during "Initializing Java Tooling"

Illegal UTF8 string in constant pool in class file org/eclipse/jdt/internal/core/search/BasicSearchEngine

I am on Ubuntu 9.10 using the latest version of Eclipse. Please let me know how I can fix this.

Can you check the checksum of the file you downloaded?
It looks like a corrupted file.

Hm...I don't think so. I shouldn't still have the file, because I installed it quite a long time ago (say six months), and it only started acting up yesterday.

I wonder if there is a problem with your hard disk? It certainly does sound
like a file (the jdt.core plugin jar) has gotten corrupted.

That's what the error message seemed to imply, and I thought reinstalling it would help, but it did not...
Any suggestions?
