Hi all,

I wanted to create a server to communicate with iPhone application. So I installed Eclipse, WTP, Sysdeo Tomcat, but when I go Eclipse->Preferences->Server->Runtime Environments->Add, I can't see Apache Server Tomcat 5.5! I installed Apache Tomcat 5.5.28 and specified the home path in Preferences->Tomcat, but nothing is showing when I try to add a server (it cannot find the server). I was searching on the net for a long time but I can't seem to fix this problem. Can anyone help me with this issue?

Your help is greatly appreciated!
Deksa

P.S.: Thanks to Angel Vera for redirecting me to this forum!
P.P.S: I wanted to send you some screenshots but I cannot see a place to attach them. (when I tried on the preview with a screenshot from my mac, it didn't render so I presume it is not going to work)

Here is the eclipse error log file (as requested by Angel Vera):

When you go to Eclipse->Preferences->Server->Runtime Environments->Add,
what categories do you see?

Cheers,
Larry

P.S. In case you weren't aware, Sysdeo Tomcat is separate implementation
of Tomcat server support. Unless something has changed, it does not
integrate with WTP, i.e. it has it's own "web" project type and doesn't
work with WTP's Dynamic Web Projects.

Hi Larry,

It shows only "J2EE Runtime Library". Nothing more.
I started tomcat on the machine (from console and tried the supplied sample jsp - it works), but it seems like there is some dependency missing in the eclipse.
Is there a place where I can specify to the eclipse the home of tomcat? Does he find these runtime environments automatically?

I know about sysdeo tomcat plug-in. I remember using wtp and I didn't remember if I used sysdeo and wtp together so I tried downloading that plugin also... but I need wtp working.

Anyway thanks for the reply!
Kind Regards,
Deksa

You would normally set up Tomcat as a server runtime on a preference
page under the "Server" category.

If this is a Tomcat package installed as part of your OS, it's most
likely had its layout altered from the builds you would get directly
from http://tomcat.apache.org/ The layout of those builds is what's
expected as it's the only one WTP can reliably predict.

Other categories should be listed in this preference page regardless of
the presence of the servers on your system. It indicates that a number
of WTP server related plug-ins are not running. Unfortunately, I don't
know off the top of my head what missing dependency would cause those
plug-ins not to run and not take out the "Eclipse->Preferences->Server"
preference page as well.

You could try the technique I use when trying to diagnose dependency
issues, which is to add "-debug" and "-clean" to the Eclipse startup
arguments. If added to the eclipse.ini file, they should appear each on
their own line and above the "-vmargs" line. The "-debug" will cause
the Error Log view to list plug-ins (called bundles) which don't
"resolve", i.e. can't run due to missing dependencies. The "-clean"
forces Eclipse to resolve all the bundles again, which Eclipse would
otherwise skip since it has already been done and would make startup
time unnecessarily longer. When Eclipse finally starts, open the Error
Log to see which bundles didn't resolve.

If this problem is due to missing dependencies,
"org.eclipse.jst.server.tomcat.core" should be one of those bundles that
didn't resolve. If you expand that item, it should show what
dependencies it is missing. These missing dependencies may actually be
missing, but could also be a "cascade" problem because that bundle is
missing one or more of it's dependencies. Finding the "root" missing
dependencies can be a bit of a challenge sometimes. If you are able to
try this, is "org.eclipse.jst.server.tomcat.core" unresolved and what
are its missing bundles?

Cheers,
Larry

You have WTP's prereqs installed, right, such as the right version
of EMF in particular? Did you put this installation together
manually, or did you start with the Galileo SR1 "Eclipse IDE for
Java EE Developers"?
