Are the same security provisions for an applet in an SWT browser the same as in any other browser? That is does the java.policy file get involved if an applet wants to write to a client pc. I ask because I think that if you use swt browser inside eclipse, you are not really in the same situation as an applet run from IE so the java.policy file is preventing viruses from accessing your computer for example. Whereas if a client is running an eclipse RCP, they have installed it on their pc and understand files might be changed.

Basically we want the applet to read and write in an swt browser inside an eclipse RCP without having to modify client java.policy files. Thanks for your help.

Hi,

The SWT Browser just embeds an instance of the native browser (eg.- IE on
Windows), and tries to stay out of the native browser's way as much as
possible. So the permissions behaviour should be the same as if viewing the
applet in stand-alone IE (including the use of an IE-detected JRE, which may
not be the same one that you have launched eclipse with).

It should not be possible to make an applet viewed in the SWT Browser access
the local file system without modifying java.policy. Perhaps an applet is
the wrong thing to use here, especially if you're running in the context of
an RCP app that is already installed and therefore more trusted.
