[ATL] ATL for Ecore or for KM3 files? [message #493993] Wed, 28 October 2009 12:42 Go to next message

Hi all,

may be a silly question, but for what kind of metamodels is ATL defined?
Only for KM3 or is it possible to transform Ecore based models, also?

And a second one: Why should one use KM3 for metamodeling instead of
Ecore? They both look very similar. Is there a rule of thumb, where KM3
is much more preferable as Ecore or is it just another implementation?

Thanks a lot
Timothy

Hello Timothy,

Regarding to your first question, ATL can transform Ecore models as well as KM3 models.

Actually, I don't know which one of these two metamodel representation is preferable.

Thank you,

AFAIK KM3 is really technology-agnostic, while ECore is somehow JAVA-dependant since you'll have to use the system of Primitive Data Types of Java to type your metaobjects ... apart from this I'd rather say you can use any of them.

BTW ... if you plan to develop EMF/GMF editors I reccomend usnig ECore to avoid having to map your KM3 metamodel to an ECore one ... you'll discover what I refer to ... Smile
