When trying to run our RCP application (built on Eclipse 3.4M7 for Solaris 10 GTK x86_64), we cannot get the external browser to launch. Instead an error dialog pops up titled "Problem Opening Link" and stating "Unable to open web browser on {0}."

The same application, built for Eclipse 3.4 on Solaris Sparc (32-bit) works just fine.

Any hints?

Eclipse has code to determine the location of the web browser for the OS so it can launch it. On some OSs such as Windows and MacOS this search is very reliable because Eclipse uses a system call to find the browser. On Solaris the code uses heuristics to look for a browser and these do not always succeed. You should be able to bring a browser up if you open the preference page general/Web browser and use the New... button to search for Firefox or other Mozilla browser on your system.
