Hi,

Here is the issue I am trying to solve.

1. When I opened a new report template in an older environment, a warning
dialog popped up and said "The report file of version "3.2.17" is not
supported."

2. I opened the report template and it's version is 3.2.17 where the
version of a template I created in the older environment is 3.2.16.

3. I manually changed the version of the new template to 3.2.16 and it
works fine with a data source that has two, three entries of data.

4. I also noticed that the BIRT designer that is used to create the
templates in the old environment has a version of 2.3.0 and the new
templates are created by BIRT 2.3.2.

Is there a way to make the templates backwards compatible? Please advise.

Neil

Neil,

I do not think there is an easy way to do this, because many rom
elements that are new may have been added.

Hi,

I assume rom means reporting object model? Does that mean a new version of
BIRT causes this to happen?

Please advise,

regards,

Neil,

When we add new report items to the rom, previous engines will have no
idea on how to process them.

Hi,

I changed the version number manually and it works fine. Is it safe to
assume that if I use the features that exist in the previous version, my
report template should always be backwards compatible? Also, is there a
way to determine what features might break the backwards compatibility? (A
list of new feature after BIRT 2.3.0?)

please advise.

regards,

Neil

Neil,

You will probably have to search bugzilla to see all the changes that
were made. There should not be that many as you are only talking about
a minor version number change.
