Problem installing Subversive: no Subversive features shown in UI [message #47838] Thu, 25 June 2009 12:57 Go to next message

Hello!
A co-worker of mine running a Linux Debian has problems installing
Subversive 0.7.8 from the Galileo Update Site on an Eclipse IDE for Java
EE Developers Galileo package.

He selected and installed the following packages from the Galileo update
site and the Polarion connectors site:

- Subversive SVN Team Provider 0.7.8.I20090506-1500
- Subversive SVN Integration for the Mylyn Project 0.7.8.I20090506-1500
- SVNKit 1.2.2 Implementation 0.7.8.I20090505-1500
(the last one brings Subversive SVN Connectors 0.7.8.I20090505-1500 too)

Installation went fine, with no errors. However, Eclipse UI doesn't show
any Subversive feature, just like if Subversive weren't installed.

That is, for instance:
- no SVN Repository Exploring perspective available
- no Help | Subversive submenu
- no Preferences | Team | SVN preferences group

He also tried to launch Eclipse with -clean option, to uninstall and
reinstall Subversive completely but with no luck.

Nothing is written in the log file (contained in the workspace/.metadata
folder) and nothing about problems starting Subversive is shown by
starting Eclipse with -consolelog -debug command line parameters.

He is running Eclipse with Sun JRE 1.6.0_13 or Sun JRE 1.6.0_14.

Following the same steps on a Windows XP X64 Edition on a plain Eclipse
3.5 Runtime Binary installation with WTP, TPTP, Mylyn, JDT, CVS and
other plugins installed doesn't give any problems and Subversive
features are available.

Any help would be appreciated.

Mauro.

Hello Mauro,

At first, please, check whether you have Subversive features installed or
not, you should have Subversive related items in Help/About Eclipse SDK
press Installation details button, Installed Software tab.
Also I can suppose that you don't have Subversive items anywhere because
Subversive capability is disabled. You can check it in the following way:
select Windows/Open Perspective/Other... and you don't have Subversive
perspecive in Open Perpective dialog, but if you select Show All option in
left bottom corner, Subversive should appear in the list. If this is a
reason, then you need to enable Subversive capability: Windows/Preferences
in General/Capabilities select Team and press Advanced... button then in
Advanced Capabilities Settings dialog check SVN Support.

Hi Igor,
thanks for your answer. Unfortunately meanwhile my co-worker has
re-installed Galileo from scratch (using a platform binary runtime and
installing all the needed plugins upon it using update manager) and now
Subversive works. The old JEE package installation has been deleted, so
I can't try it again to follow your steps.
The strange thing is that if it were a problem of Subversive not being
enabled by default, it means that something (some other plugin?) must
have disabled it...

Thanks anyway!
Mauro.

Hi I am having the same problem with Debian Linux AMD64. Subversive
does not show in the preferences under Team where CVS is.
I did set it there before I installed the SVN connectors. After the
connectors it disappeared! I have put in a new post. Only saw yours
later. Thanks

Hello
I had exactly the same problem. I found out that it's caused by new mylyn installation. When You choose svn and mylyn integration then new version of mylyn will be downloaded. I don't remember exactly which version was ok but it was something like 3.2.24 - You need to go to download page and get old update site - after downgrade svn will be back.
I hope newer version of mylyn/svn will sove this error. Right now I just decided to go back to older thing. Weekly build are still bad for svn.

Interesting, we are using latest weekly builds of both Mylyn and Subversive successfully.

Cheers, Jörg

Hello
What eclipse exactly are you running? I'm sure this issue is present just when You download fresh eclipse PDT (for win) and add svn (Subversive svnkit) with mylyn update. Several friend had same issue and all had to revert their updates and block mylyn update channel because older version is much better than not-working.
I'm not sure if svn stops to work after trac connector for mylyn is installed, but this is way we are connecting with mylyn.

If I can be helpful with log files, error messages etc. feel free to ask. I can quickly reproduce this issue.

Could you please provide steps how to reproduce the problem with exact

Do you have any related error messages in Error Log view (Eclipse log file),
if you do please provide them?

Hello
First of all thanks for Your time.
Sure - I will try after my work (when I got home) to provide full step by step guide how to reproduce this issue. Mainly fresh PDT + svn + mylyn channel unblocked. I will report version numbers and exactly packages which causes this issue.

Igor Burilo wrote on Mon, 18 January 2010 03:33

As far as I remember I got some error message, but googling about it not helped much. Few days ago I could not find this error to paste it here so maybe that was something else (maybe not related). I will try today to find this again.
Thanks again for help.

Ok, just as I promised - the way to reproduce this issue:

1. fresh PDT Eclipse galileo, unpacked to program files (x86) on windows 7 pro (64bit), but I'm sure that system is not the case here - friends have same issues on xp (also with PDT Galileo)

2. adding update site: subversive weekly
http://download.eclipse.org/technology/subversive/0.7/weekly-site/

- and again - I tried also older versions, but let's stick to this one
(FYI: added site is now the only one there)

3. Install new software:
Subversive SVN Integration for the Mylyn Project (Optional) (Incubation)	0.7.8.I20091023-1300
Subversive SVN Team Provider (Incubation)	0.7.8.I20091207-1900

then next, accept, wait and restart

4. after restart there is subversive connector choose dialog - I'm taking svn kit 1.3.2 (r6267) only. Then there will be confirmation dialog with:
Subversive SVN Connectors	2.2.1.I20091215-1700
SVNKit 1.3.2 Implementation (Optional)	2.2.1.I20091215-1700

later another to agree with not signed content and after all restart.

5. ok, at this point everything is ok, there is "subversive" position under help menu, also "svn" item could be found in preferences under team "folder". Basically svn is now working fine but there was no update channel for mylyn (so it's version bundled with galileo). Ok, now this "issue part" Wink Quick check what is available in software updates sites:
EPP Packages Repository	http://download.eclipse.org/technology/epp/packages/galileo	Enabled
Galileo	http://download.eclipse.org/releases/galileo	Enabled
Subversive SVN Connectors Site	http://community.polarion.com/projects/subversive/download/eclipse/2.0/weekly-site/	Enabled
svn	http://download.eclipse.org/technology/subversive/0.7/weekly-site/	Enabled
The Eclipse Project Updates	http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/updates/3.5	Enabled

(only item named "svn" was added by me)

6. enable more update sites (mylyn)
	http://download.eclipse.org/tools/mylyn/update/e3.4	Enabled
	http://download.eclipse.org/tools/mylyn/update/extras	Enabled

and install:
    Mylyn Task List (Required)	3.3.1.v20091215-0000-e3x
    Mylyn Task-Focused Interface (Recommended)	3.3.1.v20091215-0000-e3x
    Mylyn Bridge: Eclipse IDE	3.3.1.v20091215-0000-e3x
    Mylyn Bridge: Team Support	3.3.1.v20091215-0000-e3x
    Mylyn WikiText	1.2.0.v20091215-0000-e3x

..all are installed so "an update will be done instead" -> ok, next, agree, wait Wink at the end - yes for restart

7. here we should have problem reproduced. There is no "subversive" item in help menu, no svn category in team category under preferences. SVN just disappeared. Right now it's like svn (this particular) was not installed. Ok, let's find some error messages.

edit: removed configuration message - incomplete and not needed here.

Hmmm, seems that end of my reply is cut, - if there is a need for rest of this configuration let me know so I will attach it somewhere in Internet.

View Error log - it's grayed out - I think there is no errors this time. Also I can't find anything nor in workspace (users/dominik/workspace) or eclipse settings directory (users/dominik/.eclipse). If I should try looking somewhere else - let me know.

Thanks again for all of You time. I really appreciate that. Also feel free to ask me about changes, experiments etc. As I said there is no difference when using any subversive update site (weekly or not, newest or little older). SVN is working with older version of mylyn (as far as I remember now it's 3.2.2). Maybe this issue is connected with something from my setup - basically I want svn (subversive/svnkit) + mylyn + trak (not yet installed on this setup list, but also this can trigger mylyn update which will cause svn issue).
I'm leaving on this computer those problematic empty workspace and described setup. As I said more of my friends have same issue so I needed to know how to setup this. Right now I encourage to disable mylyn updates and enter older version. Some features are not working, but svn is present and that's much more important than i.e. filled templates when commiting tickets.

Hello dominik,

Thanks for very detailed steps, I tried your scenario step-by-step with
exact versions and it works for me after all (I tried with clean Eclipse
distribution and clean workspace, i.e. I don't have any projects in
workspace). I downloaded Eclipse distribution from:
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/technolo gy/epp/downloads/release/galileo/SR1/eclipse-php-galileo-SR1 -win32.zip
Could you please check Error Log or .log file in your workspace's .metadata
folder after updating mylyn.
Does this problem happen if you don't install Subversive integration with

Hello Igor,
thanks again for Your time spent on this problem.
It's same eclipse downloaded from this location, md5 sum ends with: d657 (last four chars).
Just like You - i don't have any projects in workspace yet - for this bug report I used clean system image.
This is very strange if You end with working svn after my steps.

There is no log file there. Also 'error logs' button is gray so I can't paste any messages here.

I have both my computers today at work so I can try this immediately. I opened my eclipse as it was in last step and went to installation history window. I could mark this feature and select "uninstall". Eclipse asked me to restart and there is still problem with svn. Also I tried to remove Trac connector but this was not helpful.
I think that problem is somewhere in mylyn packages: i.e. mylyn bridge: team support. I can clearly see that the problem is related to mylyn upgrade (present in 3.3.1 and not present in ~3.2.2).

If this will be helpful I can try to set up eclipse on my netbook, and give You access to it. You will see the problem and will be able to check everything. Write private message to me and I'll set up vnc access and send You username and password. In that case let me know when You would like to try that - I need to know when should I leave this computer working.

Thanks again for help

I think it would be easier to archive your Eclipse which contains already
installed Mylyn and Subversive, where Subversive doesn't work, share it
somewhere and provide me a link in order I can download it. Did you write
about this problem to Mylyn (if not then I can ask them)?

Here it is:
http://uploading.com/files/3mb5be9e/eclipse%2Bprofile%252Bwo rkspace.zip/
Let me know if this link works - I just googled for file upload service and this one the first that made possible to share big file (22MB).
Archive contains empty workspace and .eclipse folder after all (when I removed mylyn team provider).
Hope this helps to find out about this problem.

No, this is the only place. It's the one I found about this when trying to google for solution. If there is better place for such raport let me know about that. Feel free to copy this report and zip link anywhere You think that may be helpful.

ps. can You please remove my email address from body? It's just better to use private messages. Mailbox can easily be used for spam messages generated by robots.

Could you please tell how/where I need to point to provided by you
".eclipse" folder in order to run Eclipse with plugins/features in
".eclipse" folder?

What system are You using?
Those folders are exported from Win7. There You can't write anywhere outside Your home folder. It's much more like unix than previous windows. Eclipse somewhere stores it's settings and that's ".eclipse". workspace is the folder about workspace (and that is not important right now).
I think You should try to search for ".eclipse" or maybe content such as plugins or configuration. Those are created automatically during first run and may be different on every system. Then when found somewhere in system just replace. Eclipse will ask about workspace but You can create new.
On windows 7 I found those folders in:
c:\users\dominik\.eclipse
c:\users\dominik\workspace (but this was set by me on first start)
Maybe eclipse will create .eclipse folder inside eclipse installation directory (on previous windows or when installed outside restricted to administrator "program files"/"program files (x86). Maybe it will create content of that folder somewhere.

As I said windows 7 is much better in permissions and will not allow to write outside home folder without administrator access. This is normal in Linux and thanks to that there is no such trash in filesystem.

In Windows XP, .eclipse is in "c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\".

Mauro.

Hello dominik,

This is a problem of p2, for more details please see:
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=287246, this problem isn't yet
resolved but it contains a workaround.

I tried described workaround and such update solved my issue.

Thanks for all, for that link. I just made upgrade with administrator privileges and that helped - I have both - new mylyn and new svn. On my computer I have no restrictions about eclipse so that was not a big problem and helped a lot.

Thanks again for time spent on this issue, I hope that this thread will be found by more people with this issue and more will find this beneficial. Thanks again for this clue Smile

ps. Igor can I ask You again for my email removal - it's still there. It's not so much important but it would be nice.

Hello dominik,

You're welcome.

As I checked there's no your email in message body in my last message, or do
you mean some other place where I put your email?

dominik,
your e-mail address appears in all messages of yours in the "from"
address field. So, SPAM bots can take it from there, too, regardless of
it being shown in message bodies.

Mauro.

Mauro: I doubt about that - searching in source code of page I can see it only in Igor message. It's only there. It would be very strange if such big forum would be able to feed spam bots.
Maybe You are privilaged user so You can see those emails? In settings there is option to show them or not. I always set this to allow only PM messages - they are just better. I keep e-mail only for notification (that's comfortable).
I disable now "allow e-mail" communication, but my email is still included in body (also for non-logged users).

You're actually using a web interface to a newsgroup. If you use a news
client and you have access to the NNTP server, you can see your e-mail
address in the "From" field of any of your messages.

I would suggest you to alter your e-mail address in a way that cheats
SPAM bots, unless the web interface allows for it.

Mauro.

Thank You both for explanation. I was sure that this is only web interface with icons and web-administration panel. If this is tranfered to usenet or mailing list - I understand.
Thanks again for help Smile
