RCP "export" broken -- can Eclipse please develop a new solution? [message #467644] Wed, 09 May 2007 11:48 Go to next message

The most common post by far on this newsgroup is some version of "my export fails"; I myself
repeatedly have had this problem. No two solutions are alike, and there does not seem to be any way
to get the beast to behave stably. People try with plugins or with features and it makes no
difference (I am using features). The basic problem seems to be a deeply flawed design, which
requires that the same data be added in multiple places, but which provides no feature at all for
verifying that data until the export fails (and that failure itself simply *NEVER* provides any
report useful for fixing the failure). Worse, as noted, the export feature is unstable -- once you
have it working, all it takes is to change one dependency somewhere, or to add one plug-in anywhere,
and -- splat.

I think we are all quite tired of this (I know I am, having just had my Nth such failure, as usual
not yet fixed and with no clue how to proceed).

My suggestion is that we file a bug, record all our diverse problems and cases, and vote for it -- I
guess we would have over 100 votes in one day. If in addition we make it plain on this newsgroup
that we consider this crucial to the future success of RCP (which in fact it is), we may be able to
get past the apparent state of denial that seems to exist in Eclipse central regarding this issue.
(I say that, b/c whenever they respond to an individual case, they always describe the issue as if
it were "coder failure", and refuse to acknowledge that the system is just, well, broken.)

Hi,

If you are fustrated then you can also vote for this one which I really
think is going to be a problem when 3.3 gets out with this bug [1] (at
least for all the Win32 users).
