Eclipse cannot run on Intel EM64T with Fedora Core 3 [message #44436] Thu, 31 March 2005 15:29 Go to next message

I had successfully used Eclipse on various platforms before but I cannot
make sense of my latest experience on a new system I just started with.
I am in front of a 64-bit Pentium machine (EM64T to be exact) with newly
installed Fedora Core 3 (2.6.9) which is required for the project I am on.
I already overcome the "GNU Java interpreter" issue and my machine is
running genuine Sun-supplied JRE 1.5.0_02 (I made sure about that!)
However, none of the installation packages I have tried gave me any luck:

eclipse-SDK-3.0.2-linux-motif.zip (this "generic" version that seemed to
be working for me on almost anything before just does not unzip gracefully
- I tried several downloads from different sites and I always end up with
"corrupt archive" result)

eclipse-SDK-3.0.2-linux-gtk-ia64.zip (this seems to be the most correct
version for my system yet after graceful unpacking it does not want to
start; when I invoke eclipse via ./eclipse it says "bash: ./eclipse :
cannot execute binary file"

BTW, I am running things with root priviledges.

Any clues?

Which version should I download and how to make sure that I am dealing
with correct package?

I will appreciate any help.

Zee

Have you tried the Eclipse packages from www.jpackage.org? My workstation
(x86) runs with Fedora Core 3 and I use the JDK and Eclipse packages from
there. For me this has the positive effect that JDK and Eclipse are in the
package management of Fedora and the JDK uses the alternate configuration
system, where I can install more than one JDK and I can switch between them.
But please first look if they have a suitable package for your machine.
