If you're getting that when you use the preview function from the top menu
(as opposed to the preview tab in the design area), it may be that you
haven't included the Java bin directory in your path. BIRT includes an
embedded version of Apache Jakarta Tomcat for previewing reports and
Tomcat's JSP engine requires a Java compiler.

For my (default) installation of version 1.4.2_08 of the Java SDK on
windows, here's what I added to get things working:

C:\j2sdk1.4.2_08\bin

Of course, you also need to have installed the JDK in the first place as
noted in the install instructions.

thank you for your answer, but i have the same problem with the preview
tab in the design area! the path is correctly set into the bin directory
of my java installation. i have no idea what goes wrong :(

bernhard,

Can you please let us know the error msg from the Tomcat. The error log
locates at "Elcipse Home\workspace\.metadata\.plugins\org.eclipse.tomcat\"

i have found the problem, my workspace was on a remote network directory
and there the error from tomcat occured. i tried to put the workspace on
my local drive - and now it works ;-) thank you for your help ...
