How can I use the Validation component without Eclipse= I`m writing a
simple console application.
I have defined my constraints in Java, I guess I need to load them myself
in some way.

Hi, Niclas,

The EMF Validation Framework is designed to take advantage of the Eclipse
Platform; it is required. If you need an Eclipse-free validation
capability, you can use the EValidator API defined in core EMF:

http://dev.eclipse.org/viewcvs/indextools.cgi/*checkout*/org .eclipse.emf/doc/org.eclipse.emf.doc/references/overview/EMF .Validation.html

Also, you might want to have a look at the attachment to the following
bugzilla that proposes a rework of the EMF Validation Framework for
Eclipse-free deployment. I haven't had a chance to review in detail what
is required to adopt it, but it may help you:

https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=167972

Cheers,

Christian

Is there a plan on including this feature (eclipse-free deployment) in
the next release?

Thanks,
Vasanth

Hi, Vasanth,

Currently, there is no plan to include this, no.

Christian,

Is it that the concept of using the validation framework stand-alone
doesn't align well with the focus of the workgroup or is it because of
lack of support/time/need/...?

If it is the latter, I could pitch in to get some work done on this (or
possibly Horacio Blanco, who reported Bug #167972, and provided some
patches earlier, if he is still interested?)

Thanks,
Vasanth

Hi, Vasanth,

Almost every aspect of the design of the EMF Validation Framework is geared
towards the Eclipse plug-in architecture. It is intended for an
environment in which multiple applications are deployed and integrated
externally by third parties, with constructs like client contexts and
constraint bindings to unravel the more complex scenarios of conflict
between multiple clients of the same models. In an RCP, these use cases
just don't seem very interesting.

The EValidator and related API in the EMF core should be sufficient for most
cases (even composing validators from different sources is not difficult).
Even the "live" mode offered by the Validation component is easily adapted
to an EValidator-based incremental validation of the objects affected by
Command execution.

Cheers,

Christian
