Request for Discussion: Proposed Application Deployment Metamodel [message #3365]

The Eclipse Test & Performance Tools Platform Monitoring Project currently
lacks infrastructure to describe the physical and logical components of
deployed applications and their relationships. We would like to explore
community interest in creating a unified metamodel capable of capturing
and organizing this kind of information. We are soliciting feedback from
the community on individual requirements and relevant standards in this
area.

We envision that these models will ultimately describe the following
features of a deployed application.
- physical server and network infrastructure
- virtualization layers
- application containers and component structure

Our initial priority for this effort is Java application component
structure.

Possible providers or consumers of this sort of information would include
the following kinds of tools.
- application monitoring
- profiling
- application packaging and deployment
- change management

proposed extensions.

We've been searching for specifications related to metamodels of
production applications. The only promising item we've found so far is
OMGs Deployment & Configuration of Component-based Distributed
Applications Specification (usually abbreviated "D&C," OMG document
ptc/2004-08-01) as recommended to us by Andreas Hoffman. From the D&C
working draft:

The specification defines:
-- Metadata to describe component-based applications
and their requirements (Component Data Model) and
interfaces to store, browse and retrieve such
metadata (Component Management Model).
-- Metadata to describe heterogeneous distributed
target systems and their capabilities (Target Data
Model) and interfaces to collect and retrieve such
metadata (Target Management Model).
-- Metadata to describe a specific deployment of an
application into a distributed target system
(Execution Data Model) and interfaces to execute
deployments (Execution Management Model).
...

The D&C declares mappings to CORBA CCM, but the metadata and interfaces
they describe above are generic to distributed applications. We believe
that this could make a good foundation for building such a facility into
the Eclipse Test & Performance Tools Platform.

If there are other standards we should consider, please let us know by
responding to this newsgroup. Any comments are welcome.

Describing features of deployed applications and/or infrastructure is
something that we are also thinking about. Have you seen DCML from Oasis?
