Hi,
Currently we run our reporting application with Actuate 8. user can
choosse different Ad-hoc reports and then select different options
(parameters for a sql procedure), and submit the Job and log out. The Job
runs in background for few hours and then emails the user for success or
failure, with the csv report location if a success.

when we planned to replace the reporting tool with BIRT, i found many
things identical which can be replaced but i was not able to find a way to
have the BIRT reports run in background when an user submits a query and
logs out.

Can anyone please help me with this? Is there any functionalit with BIRT
which i can use to have multiple reports run in background once users
submit the Job and logout?

Thanks a bunch!!

Anand,

This is going to depend. If you are upgrading to Actuate 9, 10, or
iServer Express, this functionality will remain unchanged. If you are
just running the BIRT report engine standalone, then it is up to you to
do this. I would recommend that you schedule them using Scheduled Jobs
or AT if your on Windows, or as a background process or using a cronjob
using *nix.

Thanks John for the info. Are yo aware of any open source tool that can be
integrated with BIRT to achieve the Job scheduling monitoring
functionality, similar to that of ISERVER for Actuate.

Thanks,
Anand

Actually, no, I usually roll my own.

There is iServer Express, which is not free or open source. Its
everything youve come to expect from iServer, except it only supports
BIRT and eSpreadsheet, and is much cheaper.

I don't know off hand, but maybe Pentaho. I haven't used it personally,
but I know they have BIRT integrated in it, I just don't know if they
support scheduling jobs.
