Ok here we go. First Eclipse tries to install and then dies with no .p2

in Linux my home directory is on /export/home/harrison
I want to install it in /export/home/harrison/Tools/eclipse... OK
when I do an "echo $HOME /export/home/harrison" which is just like in the etc/paswd file.
There is no /home directory.
my /home drive (data) with public and home is mounted in /export

after I take out /home & .eclisple directory with a new download from you which is after unpacking is in /export/home/Downloads/software/eclipse-installer.
from the shell when I invoke the installer from a command line.
I cd to that directory and run the eclipse-inst file
first thing I see the installer's splash page.
Then I get the installer for take you pick GCC
then I get the license page and agree
It asks me where to install this and I put in
/export/home/harrison/Tools/eclipse.C
a few minutes it fails
on my / file system I find a 'new directory' /home and here is the error from the log!
<b>
~/Downloads/software/eclipse-installer$ ./eclipse-inst
java.io.FileNotFoundException: /home/harrison/.p2/pool/artifacts.xml (No such file or directory) </b>

Eclipse (Java) applications use the system property user.home but it sounds like that's not being set property for your case, which seems weird but I expect that depends on how your environment is set.

You might be better to just untar a package:

https://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/

But note that even when you launch such a package, it will likely have the same confusion about where exactly is your user.home....
