It seems that the model explorer only contains referenced elements. Can you check the size of the .uml file?
It's rather unlikely that Eclipse somehow lost the file content, but rather that an exception happened during the last save of the model. Which Eclipse / Papyrus version are using?

Hi Vincent,
renaming the existing files by i.e. adding ".backup" as additional
suffix before saving the new model and deleting the backup files after the new models have been successfully written would enable to restore the prior state of the model. In my regard this is preferable over loosing everything.
How much programming effort would that imply?

Hi,
The solution is an interesting functionality. After discussion with colleagues, the solution is more complex when papyrus is used in a collaborative mode with CDO for example.
