Super newby but I have vast experience with the old 1980's client-side java. There will never be a jre installed on my mac or ubuntu clients. Ever. Please tell me that's not what Eclipse is based on. Someone, please say there's a native macos version of Eclipse.

Nope. It's >99% written in Java.
