Adding new software - destroys Eclipse editor [message #1836202]

After fresh install of 2020-03 I run a C++ test program - no problem.
Adding ANY new software I no longer have access to Eclipse editor.
Here is the message I get instead:

No editor descriptor for id org.eclipse.cdt.ui.editor.CEditor

Using Ubuntu 16 and like to see solution.
