Hi !

With the following things provided, who would start a new RCP application with e3 and who would with e4?

- We'd very much like to use the error log view, the console view and maybe the properties views that are e3.
- We do have some other e3 RCP apps that we might(!) want to share code with

I guess, both prerequirements would imply compatibility mode when using e4.

So the more precise question is:
Who would start a new application with e3 and who would with e4 in compatibility mode?

Thanks for your input!
Rice

OK, let's get a step back then:
Assuming, we wouldn't have to choose between e3 and e4:
Is there anyone left who would start a bigger project from scratch with RCP at all?

We just attempt to start a bigger project using RCP. We decided to go for e4 because if anything it will be e4 that will survive longterm.

Glad to hear that, we'd be two then :)

Will you use the compatibility layer then, so you can use the error log view, properties view, console view, preference pages and the like?

And it also seems the only two people.

We are not sure we need them so for now we won't be using it. We are still fighting intial setup issues, deployment as Webstart application and calling restservices. The state of things is...not great, even more issues than intially expected.

...calling restservices.

Just out of curiosity: How are these problems related to Eclipse RCP ?

There is no "proper" or "standard" way to call REST services from a RCP client and finding a "clean" way to do so including automatic mapping of responses, adding headers etc and getting it to run properly within the OSGI/RCP environment was and is quite a headache. Especially as we would like to deplay the whole client as a webstart application and haven't figured out a way how to do so. See my other thread in this very forum.
