Is Draw2D deprecated? [message #1805158] Mon, 08 April 2019 18:35 Go to next message

We have a significant investment in code written over years using Draw2D.

Now, the page https://projects.eclipse.org/projects/tools.gef refers to Draw2D as a "legacy component":

Quote:
Please note that the legacy components Draw2d 3.x, GEF (MVC) 3.x, and Zest 1.x have been put into 'pure maintenance' mode.

But it also says that it's an integral part of the Eclipse ecosystem, and will continue to be included:

Quote:
As they are still an integral part of the Eclipse ecosystem, we will continue to include them in the simultaneous release, but new revisions will only be created as patches are provided by the community.

Questions:

* Is Draw2D deprecated?

* If we continue to develop our existing investment in code written atop Draw2D -- with the acceptance that it's in maintenance mode -- do we face a danger that Draw2D will be removed in future versions of Eclipse?

Hi Andrew,

Draw2D is deprecated in a sense that it receives no ongoing effort to make it easier to use, as the new generation of GEF already uses a different graphics stack (based on JavaFX). However, it is widely used in the Eclipse community as a basis for graphical editors, so currently there are no plans to remove it, and it is unlikely it will be removed in the next few years.

Best regards,
Zoltán

Hi Andrew,

as Zoltan explained already, there are no plans w.r.t. removal of GEF-Legacy from Eclipse.

Nonetheless, I encourage you to try out current GEF and JavaFX, which provides a lot of additional graphical capabilities (effects, animations, video, 3D, etc.).

Best regards,
Matthias

Thank you for the helpful responses, Matthias and Zoltan.

It's good to hear that Draw2D isn't going away.
