Java 11 support for Eclipse 2018-09 (4.9) no longer exists [message #1804797] Mon, 01 April 2019 08:43 Go to next message

Hi all,

According to this eclipse-dev post , Java 11 support for eclipse 4.9 was released in Sep 2018 but doesn't seem to exist anymore.
The market place link as mentioned in the aforementioned post leads to 404 error.

Is the support withdrawn? or any plans to bring it back later in future?
What happened to it?

I could live with Java 12 support but it only seems to exist for eclipse 2019-03 (4.11).
Any plans for Java 12 support for eclipse 2018-09 (4.9) ?

Thanks in advance.

Is there a reason you can't just install the last release 2019-09? No, older releases will not be changed to support newer versions of Java; that will only happen in newer releases.

Java 12 support is available at https://marketplace.eclipse.org/content/java-12-support-eclipse-2019-03-411 as mentioned in eclipse dev post
https://www.eclipse.org/lists/eclipse-dev/msg11011.html

As Java 12 Market place is available, Java 11 market place entry has been removed.

Full fledged Java 11 support has been included in 2018-12 (4.10) release. If you upgrade to 4.10 you'll get Java 11 support out of the box. Please upgrade to 2018-12(4.10) release.

Java 12 support is available as a patch with 4.11 release and out of the box support will be included in 4.12.

Thanks for the response Ed.
Our production depends on eclipse 2018-09. Upgrading has a cost, so we were refraining from doing it.

This is expected. I don't expect it to be supported out of the box. That's why there a separate plugin was built, which is sadly gone.

This seems like an oversight.

The new phenomenon of frequent and transient major Java releases and the new three-monthly Eclipse releases present new challenges.

While backporting Java support is unlikely, I don't see why today's recommended installs do not remain available for at least two years. I suggest raising a Bugzilla and maybe someone can restore the link or at least provide an alternative URL.

We will not restore the Marketplace entry, but I have restored the update site (https://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/updates/4.9-P-builds/) again.
