I've been using Eclipse on Windows XP for years, and in all that time
one "constant" has been that the update process is hit-or-miss. One
time everything will work flawlessly... the next time it will start to
download something and the update process will immediately hang. I've
experimented with giving it a long time (12 hours) but once it gets
into this state, the download never progresses. If you try to exit
from Eclipse it will hang at the "Saving Workspace" dialog, and the
only recovery possible is to kill the entire process.

I know that the update process was rewritten a couple of releases ago,
but it seems that something deep inside is still not coping very well
with flaky mirrors (that's my guess, at least).

Is this being addressed anywhere?

Search in Bugzilla under the RT > Equinox > p2 component.
Here:
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/query.cgi?classification=RT&am p;product=Equinox&component=p2

If you don't find anything that looks relevant, please enter a bug with
as much detail as possible.

Thanks for the pointer. I found two possibly related bugs that might
explain the behavior:

https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=248522
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=238548

Next time I run updates I'll start Wireshark to see if an update site
timeout is involved in the hang (that's what it appears to be from my
vantage point).
