Installing java runtime from eclipse package [message #1785142] Mon, 09 April 2018 22:46 Go to next message

Hi all,

Sorry for some newbie questions.

Just been downloaded the eclipse package from below link and actually I am trying to find out if it's feasible to install the java runtime from this package onto my windows client.

https: //developer.ibm.com/javasdk/downloads/eclipse/

Actually I am looking for 2 things:
1) See if my existing Oracle JRE could be replaced by IBM java runtime.
2) See if I can use eclipse package to extract out the Java runtime for my installation on Windows client.

After unzip the package and I realize there's a folder, which called "ibm_sdk", but I am not sure if this's the correct thing that I need. If yes, is there any cost on this? I guess it wasn't an open source project on this module?

Thanks.

This is something you'll have to discuss with IBM, and I will point out that the page you linked to also has links for downloading the "IBM SDK, Java Technology Edition" on its own. I suspect you'll need to do a very careful legal review of whether the license allows you to use individual parts of the Eclipse download separately. My suspicion is that you are not, but IANAL.

Note that IBM's J9 JVM itself is now an open source project at Eclipse so you might want to look at https://www.eclipse.org/openj9/ though of course the SDK (the Java libraries themselves http://openjdk.java.net/ ) and the virtual machine are two different things governed by different license terms....
