How to tell an Eclipse Workspace where to put a new view/editor? [message #1784808] Wed, 04 April 2018 10:17

My general issue is that I don't know how to tell Eclipse what my Workspace layout is meant to be, and hence how not to upset it by creating new windows where they don't fit.

My specific issue is that I'm using my monitors in portrait orientation, so my editor needs to take up the full width of the screen. But when I choose to open a file for editing, Eclipse creates a new full-height view/sub-window (what's the proper term?) at the right hand side of the workspace. This is useless (it's too narrow to edit in) and annoying (every time, it obliges me to move the view/perspective/editor onto my (main, pre-existing) editor and minimise the now-empty sub-window).

Is there any way I can tell Eclipse to open files in one of the existing sub-windows, and preferably which one? Or at least to create new sub-windows (what *is* the term?) at the bottom rather than the side?

Thanks,

Ian
