Thing the first: What happened to Pluto?
Thing the next: Current splash screen depicts electrons, not photons:

I made a splash screen than actually has photons in it:

Users may copy attachment to ~/.p2/pool/plugins/org.eclipse.platform_xxx/splash.bmp

Hi,

For the name, see https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=510201 for details. Photon was chosen by the Eclipse Community under a transparent process, taking into accounts various constraints.
About the splashscreen, it's already settled. See https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=518941 . You can already download milestones at https://www.eclipse.org/downloads/index-developer.php and see this splashscreen in action.
