I'm running Eclipse Luna on Linux and primarily develop in Java... all is well here. However, I occasionally do some C/C++ development. I'm certain that months ago when I used C++ code last, the Eclipse IDE formatted the text of my code nicely with colors for keywords, text strings, errors, warnings, etc. but now, it all just comes up with black text like it doesn't recognize it as code, but a simple text file. I've got a perspective for C/C++, but selecting it does nothing.

How do I get my nice and helpful formatting back?

Do you have CDT installed? (Luna is very very old.)

I don't believe so, if I do, I didn't install it on purpose.

You'll want to use Help -> Install New Software and find "C/C++ Development Tools". Be especially aware of the Open With on the context menu to ensure you're opening the file with CDT's editor (and of course that CDT's editor is installed and available on the list of Open With choices).
