Write only channel [message #1754362] Thu, 16 February 2017 13:02 Go to next message

I was looking at the panasonic tv binding regarding IR commands that can be sent to the handler and was thinking of porting this to lgtvserial binding, but something looks missing from my point of view.

This is more of a philosophical question right now though.

The channel that would represent that IR command channel doesn't really have a state per say because it is only used to send a command and nothing can be read back from that channel.

Would it not make sense to have a "write-only" channel ?

The next question that would bring if we were to go that way is how would we link this to an item and represent this visually to users (if at all), or would that be treated like an advanced channel ?

Does that even make sense ?

What is done today it simply to use a channel and accept commands, while not setting any state update for it; such a channel can potentially simply stay in "NULL" state and thus act as a "write-only" channel.
In order to also deactivate automatic state updates of items, we will still have to wait for https://github.com/eclipse/smarthome/issues/595 to be implemented.
