I have recently tried to update java from 1.7 to 1.8 in eclipse mars 2.0.

I installed the Java SE Runtime Environment 8 for mac

However, when I got to preferences<Java<Installed JRE's<Add<Standard VM<Directory and then select the folder I get this error at the top of the popup: Target is not a JDK Root. Java executable was not found

I would really appreciate your help. Thanks.

You probably gave it the parent (or perhaps a child) of the folder it needs. Try going one folder deeper, and/or one folder up.
