I am using eclipse neon, when I go to `pom.xml > dependencies` and click `add` it says `artifact id cannot be empty` in the lower left corner, and the search basically does not work.
I tried solutions from the other answers, I went to `window > preferences > maven` and checked `download repository index updates on startup`, restarted eclipse and it did its thing, then I right clicked `global repositories > central` and clicked `enable full index` and then `rebuild index`, it did its thing, restarted eclipse, and same error message shows up again.
I also have a bunch of folders under `Global Repositories > Central` yet it does not work.

I think that's provided by the m2e project so best to use their specific
support as described in https://www.eclipse.org/m2e/m2e-community.html
