I did some searches but none turned up exactly the scenario I'm asking about.

Bring a file into the editor from the search results.
No changes to that file.
Bring in another file from the search results.
The new file is now in the editor but the earlier file is automatically removed.

Anyone know removing the file that had no modifications can be prevented (option, setting, whatever?)

Check the General->Search preference page option for "Reuse editors to show matches". You probably want that disabled.
