... it would seem there is a non-destructive upgrade path to bring an existing installation up to the latest release, however the details are sparse - i'm not sure if this is just a good idea, or something that people do regularly.

has anyone figured out a good process for upgrading kura without having to re-install plugins and re-configure everything?

Hello,

The full Kura build does generate upgrade files (*upgrade.dp and *upgrade.sh). We don't distribute these files as this is still a work in progress. In most cases the upgrade will work as expected, but we have seen occasional issues that can result in the loss of work. We are actively working on this and hope to have a more robust solution soon.

At present the best path forward is to save your work and do a fresh install. If you want to attempt an upgrade, you will need to build Kura from the source code. I am happy to assist with this if interested.
