It is already done by Sirius: Sirius declares a viewerContentBinding
which provides its contentExtension "Sirius Content Management" as
extension of the project explorer (user can disable it from the
Customize view... menu of the Project Explorer)
Note that you could also choose to extends the ModelExplorer with your
own viewContentBinding ("org.eclipse.ui.navigator.viewer" extension point).

The ModelExplorer have the filter area allowing to retrieve domain
elements using regular expressions.
Which version of Sirius do you use ?
In Sirius 3.0.0 (will be released with Eclipse Mars in June), the
declaration of the ModelExplorer view and the Modeling perspective are
done in a new plugin (org.eclipse.sirius.ui.ext), this will allow you to
build a RCP tool without declared in this plugin (ModelExplorer view,
Modeling perspective, Sirius preference page, new Modeling Porject
wizard and convert action). If you want only a subart of those
extensions, you will have the possibility to add them in your own pugins.
